Unionized J'lem teens declare labor dispute with employer

In a rare move, a group of Jerusalem teens declared a labor dispute Wednesday with their employer- "Big Palace" celebration halls in the city.

The workers, aged 16-17, say they are paid less than minimum wage, do not receive travel expenses as required by law, health and vacation days, and do not even receive monthly pay slips.

They also maintain that their employers treat them in a humiliating fashion, screaming at them frequently.

The workers unionized through the national youth movement, Hanoar Haoved Vehalomed, who attempted to hold negotiations with the celebration hall's management that proved unsuccessful.

On Sunday, the employer hired 20 new workers, apparently to prevent a workers' strike.

Roni Kol, who owns "Big Palace" denied the youth movement's allegations. "The hall operates according to the law. Those organizing the commotion are Hanoar Haoved Vehalomed, and not the waiters. They pressured them to sign and unionize," he said.

The youth movement's spokesperson, Yoram Bar-Kovetz, says that the workers turned to the movement for help, and not the other way around.
