Anaylsis: All outcomes possible in Katsav sex crimes case
By Ze'ev Segal, Haarez Correspondent
Tags: sex crimes, Katsav, Mazuz

The decision to abandon the plea bargain deal in the sex crimes case against former president Moshe Katsav throws open the doors on all possible legal outcomes.

Attorney General Menachem Mazuz and his staff will now have to reexamine the accumulated body of evidence in its entirety and decide whether they have a sufficient legal basis for filing an indictment.

The prosecution is obligated to indict if there is a reasonable chance of conviction.

Following an indictment, Katsav and his attorneys would be granted access to the details of the investigation against the ex-president. It is likely that there will be a fierce battle over the extent of the investigation material that is handed over to the defense team, and that the debate will predominantly focus on different stances over the accumulated evidence.

It is probable that the State Prosecution will claim that the investigation data is internal material and, as such, cannot be submitted to the defense.
