Tycoon Gaydamak to resign as consultant to Angolan president
By Lily Galili, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Gaydamak, Israel, Angola

Business mogul Arcady Gaydamak on Sunday notified the president of Angola that he will step down from his position as the state's special consultant and will return the diplomatic passport issued to him within two months.

The decision comes in the wake of Gaydamak's growing political aspirations in Israel.

Gaydamak's diplomatic role in recent years has involved advancing Angola's interests in Moscow.

His close associates insist that his work has never included arms sales.

In light of his political party's increased activity and his own bid for Jerusalem's mayorship, there was growing concern that Gaydamak's possession of a diplomatic passport and his representation of Angola's interests could create legal and ethical obstacles for the billionaire businessman.
