Hamas: Sniper aimed for MK Dichter
By Haaretz correspondent and Staff , By Amos Harel

A Palestinian sniper shot at Public Security Minister Avi Dichter during a tour near the Gaza Strip border. Dichter was unharmed in the attack but his chief of staff, Mati Gil, was hit. He was taken to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon in good to fair condition. Hospital officials last night said Gil's condition was improving.

The incident occurred Friday while Dichter was leading a delegation from the Canada-Israel Committee on a tour of Sderot and environs. The gunfire occurred when the group was at the Givat Nazmit observation point overlooking the Gaza Strip.

"We were touring with a few dozen people when someone opened fire on us," Dichter said. "Unfortunately, one person was injured, but we are all safe. Everyone behaved well, as if they were used to being fired on. They hit the ground and took cover," Dichter said. Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida said the gunfire was aimed at Dichter, and that the organization had prior knowledge of his general itinerary for Friday.
