Egypt hunts men suspected of plotting terror attack in Sinai

CAIRO - Egyptian security forces were searching on Saturday for two Sudanese men suspected of planning to attack tourist targets in the Sinai peninsula, and who might be carrying explosives in their truck, security sources said.

They added that the police, who already run security checkpoints on Sinai's main roads, had set up additional roadblocks on tracks and back roads to search for the men, thought to have entered Egypt through its southern border with Sudan.

"The police distributed notices to security departments in Sinai and Suez Canal provinces describing a small truck suspected of carrying quantities of explosives," one security source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Police believed the two men were in the truck and were "resolved to carry out terror attacks against tourist establishments in Sinai," the source said.

Egyptian police were also searching all private cars in the border area between north and south Sinai, security sources said.

Islamist militants carried out major bomb attacks on tourist areas in Sinai between 2004 and 2006. Egypt blamed those attacks on a group of Bedouin with militant views, and there has been no evidence of foreign involvement.

Egypt urges Fatah to hold conference to regain political strength

Egypt's intelligence chief Omar Suleiman met with delegations of the Palestinian Fatah movement, an Arab newspaper said Saturday.

Suleiman stressed the importance of holding a conference that would help the movement regain its strength and rebuild trust within the Palestinians, the paper said.

Fatah representative Barakat al-Fara told al-Hayat Arab newspaper that during his meeting with the delegation, Suleiman expressed his concern about the unity of the Palestinian people and the importance of eliminating division within the Palestinian Authority.

Al-Fara said Suleiman called upon Fatah to hold a well-organized conference about the movement that aims at "reshaping its structure through electing a youthful legitimate leadership."

Sources told al-Hayat that Egypt asked Fatah's leaders to seriously consider holding the conference as soon as possible, describing it as an "essential chance" to regain the Palestinians' trust in the movement.

Suleiman also warned that the movement might lose the next elections if the conference was not held. He said Fatah's current status reflected negatively on the political dialogue with Israel.
