Barak: Israel needs young people willing to protect it

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Thursday that Israel is doing "everything possible" to ensure the release of abducted Israel Defense Forces soldiers Gilad Shalit, Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser, Israel Radio reported.

However, in his address to Tel Aviv school pupils, Barak added that a state's independence is only assured if it is prepared to protect it. For this the state need young people who are willing to do so - even if the price is heavy, said the Defense Minister.

Israel Radio reported that Barak continued on to say Russian immigration has contributed much to the IDF's combat units.

Touching on the security situation in the south of Israel, the defense minister stressed that in last month's shooting attack at the Mercaz Harav yeshiva more people were killed than were over the past four years in the rocket-battered town of Sderot.

"No citizen is worth more or less than any other," he said.

Israel Radio reported that Barak had also told his audience that there are no talks being held with Hamas. The radio station quoted the Defense Minister as saying that Israel will not return to the negotiating table with Hamas until it recognizes the state's existence, except to negotiate Gilad Shalit's release.
