Rivals Beinisch, Friedmann join forces to shoot down 'court of economics'

The proposal to establish a court of law that specializes in economic matters has succeeded in doing what many thought impossible: Unite fierce rivals Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann and President of the Supreme Court Dorit Beinisch.

Beinish and Friedmann, who have butted heads on a myriad of issues in the past, joined forces for the first time recently to reject the proposal.

The proposal was raised by the Ariav Committee, which is headed by Treasury Director-General Yoram Ariav, and focuses on economic reforms.

Most of the committee members support the proposal. They feel that regular court judges to do not have a broad enough understanding of economic matters, a fact that hinders Israel's ability to improve its financial standing and possibly one day even become an international financial center similar to Singapore.

It appears that Beinisch and Friedmann's opposition of the proposal will force the Ariav committee to drop the proposal. Therefore, the committee is expected to recommend the appointment of district court judges with vast knowledge in economics and that most of the cases involving economic matters be routed to them.
