Dentist suspected of possibly infecting patient with AIDS commits suicide
By Jonathan Lis, Haaretz Correspondent, and Haaretz Service
Tags: Channel Two, Health Ministry

A dentist who was suspected of infecting a patient with AIDS after he failed to sterilize his tools committed suicide Wednesday.

The dentist threw himself in front of a truck that was driving along a dirt road near Golda Meir Blvd. in Jerusalem. Police are still checking whether the doctor's suicide is connected to the malpractice he committed, which was carried out just a few weeks ago.

Channel Two television reported that the dentist did not sterilize his dental tools after he operated on a patient carrying AIDS, and immediately operated on a healthy patient with the same tools. The Health Ministry confirmed the report; however it is still unclear if the patient was infected with AIDS as a result of the malpractice.

The dentist's family members refused to talk with the media and maintained that the television report was false and distorted. Channel Two maintained that "We revealed the Health Ministry's investigation which was started after there was a suspicion of severe malpractice in this case, a subject which is of utmost interest to the public. It is important to note that we refrained from publishing the identity of the doctor."

His funeral was being held on Wednesday evening.

Police are investigating if the dentist failed to just sterilize his tools, or whether he failed to properly read the AIDS patient's health forms, where it is clearly stated she carries the disease. A few days following the incident, the dentist realized he operated on an AIDS patient, but did not tell the healthy patient that he did so. It is important to note that the treatment given to those who may have been infected with AIDS can only be given a number of days after the believed interaction, which means that the healthy patient was unable to receive the proper treatment.
