Israel privatizes West Bank checkpoints, but Palestinians miss the army
By Haaretz Staff and Channel 10
Tags: checkpoints, IDF, Israel
Haaretz.com/Channel 10 daily feature for April 1, 2008.

This week, five checkpoints in the West Bank joined the future - going from barbed wire and exposure to the elements to modern crossings that look quite a bit like airport terminals.

The process is part of an ongoing privatization of Israel Defense Forces checkpoints, which are slowly but surely being contracted out by the defense ministry into the hands of private security firms.

The government insists the new checkpoints save money and increase efficiency.

But the Palestinians want the army back. Many are going kilometers out of their way to IDF-staffed checkpoints, in order to avoid the new crossings
