Court extends remand of Ramle couple suspected of abusing their eight children

The remand of another couple was extended by the Ramle Magistrate's Court on Monday due to allegations of child abuse.

The father, 45, is suspected of beating his eight children from a former wife, aged 5-12, with a pipe and burning cigarettes on them as punishment. His present wife is suspected of assisting him.

A complaint filed to the city's welfare services prompted an undercover police probe into the case. Police questioned the children, who said that the couple, and especially the father, used to beat them.

"The children were subjected for a long time to beatings, whippings, having hot water poured on them and cigarette burns on their body," a police officer told the court.

The suspects denied the allegations and the woman accused her husband of beating her up as well.

The father's attorney said the allegations were trumped up by the suspect's former wife in an attempt to receive custody over her children.

Meanwhile, the number of calls to the Children at Risk hotline reported a 50 percent increase last year compared to 2006. Some 80 percent of the calls to the hotline reported parental abuse, compared to 69 percent in 2006. Seventeen percent of the reports were about assaults by youths on a girlfriend or a female friend compared to 3 percent in 2006, 75 percent were about a male perpetrator compared to 45 percent in 2006 and in 40 percent it was a woman, compared to 36 percent in 2006.

Some reports were about men and women committing the violent acts together.

"The rise in the number of calls shows not only higher awareness but more involvement, said Yochi Feller, chairwoman of WIZO Israel, which operates the hotline in cooperation with the Social Affairs Ministry. The hotline number is 1-800-220-000.

Medical report: Or Yehuda baby was deliberately abused
A pathologic examination of the six-week-old baby from Or Yehuda, who was hospitalized with serious injuries last month, established that the infant had been deliberately abused.

The baby had been brought to hospital in serious condition and was diagnosed with severe hemorrhaging and fractured ribs.

His parents were arrested after they could not explain how the baby sustained the injuries and were questioned on suspicion of abusing their baby and causing him serious bodily harm.

The baby's severe injuries were not caused by an accident but by battering, Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court Judge Zion Kapah said Monday after reading the examination report.

The infant's parents were brought to court for the fifth time Monday to have their remand extended.

At first the police said the father had caused most of the injuries, but they now suspect the mother was the one who hurt the baby.

The family's eldest child, who is 4 years old, told police he had seen his mother "drop my baby brother." But it was not clear from his statement whether the mother had dropped the baby accidentaly or deliberately.

The mother's remand was extended by eight days, and the father's by four.

The parents deny having hurt their baby, and are not cooperating with the police.

On previous court debates the mother's lawyer, Yashar Yakobi, suggested that carrying the baby in the baby carrier could have broken his bones.

But the police investigator said the medical examination ruled out that possibility
