Last update - 04:08 31/03/2008 Small parties likely to maintain strength in local elections By Mazal Mualem?, Haaretz Correspondent Tags: politics, mayor  The improved performance by smaller parties in the municipal elections at the expense of the larger parties is likely to continue in the local vote this November, analysts say. The 1998 elections were a landmark in the weakening of the big parties (Likud and Labor) and the strong showings by local lists. Local lists garnered some 60 percent of the electorate in 1998, as opposed to 50 percent in 1993. The number of candidates fielded by the local lists also rose: 66 percent in 1998 compared with 53 percent in 1993. In Tel Aviv's local elections in 1993, for instance, Labor won 10 seats on the city council, and Likud won six. The independent list headed by Roni Milo and identified with Likud won five seats. But in 1998, Labor won only five seats and Likud four. Advertisement This decline continued in 2003: Ron Hulda'? list, identified with Labor, garnered four places on the council, and Likud reached a low of only three. In contrast, smaller, special-interest parties rose - the Pensioners won six seats and the Greens four.
