Police postpone opening of new West Bank station near J'lem
By Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent, and The Associated Press
Tags: Police, Israel, E-1

Police on Sunday said they had postponed Monday's planned opening of a new police station in the E-1 area between Jerusalem and the West Bank settlement of Ma'ale Adumim.

The project would link the capital with Ma'ale Adumim, which is one of the biggest West Bank settlements, and could sever a future Palestinian state from its intended capital in East Jerusalem.

Public Security Minister Avi Dichter stressed that the postponement is unrelated to U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's current visit to Israel, with which the station's planned opening would have coincided.

The U.S. has strongly opposed Israeli construction plans in the area.

Dichter added that the Police's Judea and Samaria district would still use the station, as had been planned. His office stated that the delay stemmed from bureaucratic reasons and administrative work which has yet to be completed.

While Israel has built the police station, it has also frozen plans for some 3,500 housing units nearby.
