Basketball / Ramat Gan still no match for mediocre Mac. T.A.

Maccabi Tel Aviv crushed Ironi Ramat Gan last night 90-69 in the last game ahead of its crucial Euroleague encounter against Barcelona next week.

Despite Maccabi's victory, Zvika Sherf's team played abysmally for large parts of the game, raking in only 28 points in the combined first two quarters. The score was 38-28 to Ramat Gan at the end of the first half.

At the start of the second half, Maccabi Tel Aviv's Tal Burstein, who had been sidelined for months due to injury, marked his return to fitness. Fans in the stands gave him a standing ovation as he was sent on. Indeed, Tel Aviv bounced back in the third quarter, taking advantage of Ramat Gan's chronic inability to score from the free-throw line (its players ended 18 of 26 from the line).

Maccabi's Terrence Morris, who played briefly during the first half, stayed on for the entire second half and provided his team with valuable points. In the fourth quarter, Ramat Gan fell apart. Coach Robby Belinko called an urgent timeout in order to stop his team's disintegration. However, he then got into a confrontation with player Robert Brown which almost became physical. Teammates had to separate the two from exchanging blows.

"My mind is focused more on the game against Barcelona than on the league game," Sherf said at the end of the game.

"It was really fun to be playing again," Burstein said. "I wasn't very excited, but the game's flow was on and I hope things carry on like this."
