Israeli ties to win top prize in prestigious Rubinstein competition

Young pianists from Israel and Taiwan tied Thursday in the 12th Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition, but the judges
awarded them second place, not first.

For the final round, all three played the same composition - a concerto by Sergei Prokofiev. Israeli radio and TV channels broadcast the final concert live.

Hu Ching Yun, 26, from Taiwan and Roman Rabinovich, 22, from Israel, shared the second prize. The judges decided there would be no first prize this year. Khatia Buniantishvili, 20, from the former Soviet republic of Georgia, came in third.

Rubinstein died in 1983 at the age of 95. His life word is highly respected in music circles, especially for his interpretations of Frederic Chopin and Johannes Brahms.

The prestigious competition is held in Israel every three years and draws some of the most talented young pianists from around the world. The competition is open to pianists aged 18-32.
