Tel Aviv goes dark as part of global 'Earth Hour' campaign
By Yigal Hai, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Earth Hour, Tel Aviv

The Tel Aviv municipality urged residents and business owners to turn off their electricity from 8-9 P.M. on Thursday evening, as part of a worldwide off-the-grid campaign against global warming and energy waste.

The "Earth Hour" campaign in Tel Aviv was organized in conjunction with the umbrella organization 'Haim V'Sviva' (Life and the Environment), a green group focused on preserving local urban nature.

The purpose of the protest was to spread awareness about the danger of greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging daily cuts cuts to energy use.

Tens of thousands of people gathered in Tel Aviv's Rabin Square for a concert powered by a bicycle generator, the main event of the evening.

Hundreds more milled about nearby Ibn Gvirol Street, to the many cafes and restaurants that had joined the initiative and were serving food and beverages by candle-light.

Twenty-four cities around the world have registered to participate in this year's Earth Hour, though the global campaign is scheduled for 8 P.M. on Saturday March 29.
