MKs okay state-funded center commemorating Gaza settlers

The Knesset approved a bill Thursday to commemorate and document the Jewish settlements of Gush Katif that was evacuated during Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in the 2005 disengagement.

National Union - National Religious Party MK Uri Ariel initiated the bill with the support of 27 MKs from Kadima, the Pensioners party, Shas, Likud, Yisrael Beiteinu and United Torah Judaism.

The government opposed the bill at first, but following an appeal by Shas MK Izhak Cohen, decided to support the new law.

According to the bill, a center memorializing the 23 Gush Katif settlements will be established in a fashion similar to the Yizhak Rabin Center. The center will include a research institute, memorial, archive and museum.

The center will hold seminars, educational programs, exhibits and activities for Israel Defense Forces soldiers which will describe the settlers lives, agricultural advances and how the residents dealt with the threat of terror.

The center will be state-funded and all the archival material will be handed over to the state.

"Even those who were wrong and thought the expulsion was the right move are now admitting that Gush Katif was an exemplar of Zionism," Ariel said.

"We must preserve the spirit of the Gush Katif pioneers and express our appreciation of there hard work and dedication," he added.
