Barzilai Medical: Fatal biopsy wasn't mistake
By Ran Reznick

The Barzilai Medical Center's management commented that "the unfortunate incident was treated with the utmost care and the doctors held several discussions, understanding that this was an extremely severe medical case. The hospital reported the incident to the Health Ministry immediately, as required, and is prepared for any outside examination and conclusions if necessary."

Pulmonary unit director Zeev Weiler said "my considerations and the other doctors' considerations were for the patient's good, and I did the best I could. This is an irregular, unfortunate and shameful incident for me and for the entire hospital ... there was a problem and the patient died probably following the procedure that ruptured the lung ... I've never seen such bleeding ... the decision to carry out the bronchoscopy was unanimous. The procedure was urgent, otherwise I wouldn't have done it on Thursday at noon to get results by 4 P.M."

Asked if the procedure had been a mistake, Weiler said: "I'm very sorry about the consequences, but it was not a mistake. Without the biopsy, the examination would have been worthless ... no operating room would have changed the results. The patient was in great danger but the treatment was administered in optimal conditions. I explained the action to the patient and she expressed fears, but every patient does."
