Money broadcasts

"It's kosher, but it stinks" is how the chair of the Knesset Economic Committee, MK Gilad Erdan (Likud) described the program starring Arcadi Gaydamak, which is supposed to be aired soon on Channel 2 (the Reshet franchise). This after the legal advisers of Reshet and the Second Broadcasting Authority explained to the members of the committee, which yesterday held a special discussion on the matter, that there is no legal course to bar the program from being broadcast, although Gaydamak heads the Social Justice party, which is planning to run in the local elections in dozens of local authorities. MK Shelly Yachimovich (Labor), who initiated the discussion, harshly attacked the program, which has Gaydamak offering advice to small businessmen.

"Giving a program in prime time to a man who is an active participant in the political arena? That is a very blatant violation of the legislator's intention," she said. "This is much more than bad taste, it breaks all the rules. It is like giving a regular program to Defense Minister Ehud Barak so that he can advise citizens on security matters. Does anyone doubt that such a program will serve to promote the goals of Gaydamak and his party? The moment a politician receives a regular program, he has a tremendous advantage of unparalleled importance."

Yachimovich adds: "And this at a time when government funding has been cut for all the other candidates, who do not have such financial capabilities. Reshet does whatever it wishes, without the Second Broadcasting Authority calling it to order, in ethical terms as well."

Reshet told Yachimovich it had yet to decide whether to pay Gaydamak for the program.

Other MKs enthusiastically supported Gaydamak and his program. "I think it is legitimate to allow Gaydamak to appear on any platform," said MK David Tal (Kadima). "The more he can contribute to Israeli society, we have to welcome that."

MK Yoram Marciano (Labor) said: "The program is under way, and I welcome it. I wish I could get a program like Gaydamak's."

Gaydamak also participated in the discussion, and said, among other things: "Reshet is a commercial company, which operates for profit. If they are inviting me, apparently the public wants to see me, and I will benefit from that. If Reshet sees tomorrow that Yachimovich attracts a larger audience than Gaydamak, then she will get a program."
