Beinisch, Friedmann trade angry letters over justices By Tomer Zarchin Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisch and Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann went another round yesterday in their battle over the selection of Supreme Court justices following Friedmann's cancellation of Sunday's scheduled search committee meeting. The session was called off after Friedmann judged that his preferred candidate, Jerusalem District Court Judge Yehudit Tzur, was unlikely to win a majority vote from the committee after Beinisch vetoed her candidacy. Beinisch sent Friedmann a letter yesterday in which she argued that the delay in filling the Supreme Court openings will force the court to cancel 10 percent of the between 270 and 340 cases it is scheduled to hear by mid-July. In his letter of response to Beinisch, Friedmann accused her of repeated postponements of the judges selection committee in the past. In addition, he claimed that in a letter to him last week, Beinisch had "tried to convince me that the main contribution toward reducing the Supreme Court's case backlog is made by the long-serving justices and not by the addition of the two recent appointments. It would thus appear that the court can meet its obligations with 12 justices, although of course I want to reach the full complement."
