18-year-old girl dies of bacterial meningitis
By Yuval Azoulay

An 18-year-old student from Kfar Sava was declared brain-dead after being infected with meningococcal meningitis. She was taken to Meir Hospital on Sunday and diagnosed with meningitis. Her condition worsened despite the antibiotics administered to fight the infection, and yesterday at around noon she was declared brain-dead.

In the past two days, 54 students at Harel Ulpana, where the girl studied, as well as three teachers and her entire family were vaccinated against the disease.

The girl's family asked that she remain on artificial respiration, despite having been declared brain-dead, while they consulted with rabbis on her condition. The hospital respected the family's wishes and officials last night refused to comment on the case.

According to Dr. Michal Chowers, head of the hospital's Infectious Disease Unit, the bacteria responsible for meningococcal meningitis attacked the girl's nervous system, causing the rapid deterioration in her condition. About 10 percent of menigococcal meningitis cases end in death, Chowers said.

She said that symptoms include headaches and fever accompanied by a rash, vomiting, confusion and diminished consciousness. "There aren't many instances in which the bacteria causes high morbidity but every year there are one or two cases in the whole country," Chowers said.
