Chief Justice: Convene judicial selection panel soonest
By Tomer Zarchin, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Dorit Beinisch

Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisch asked Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann Tuesday to reschedule the meeting of the search committee that will select future court judges, after the original meeting on Sunday was canceled last week, saying it would damage the Court's ability to hear pending cases.

Three new Supreme Court justices were expected to be selected at Sunday's meeting. The meeting was canceled after Friedmann felt he would be unable to boost Jerusalem District Court Judge Yehudit Tzoor's candidacy for Supreme Court Justice, who was his preferred candidate.

In her letter to Friedmann, Beinisch wrote that the decision to cancel the meeting two days before the expected date, and after numerous cancellations, will bring about serious consequences in relation to the Supreme Court's ability to hear pending cases and convene judicial panels.

"The continuous damage done already by the ongoing postponements of the meeting of the committee that will select justices to the Supreme Court, and the lack of a new date for the meeting in the near future, the consequential damage is expected to be significant," Beinisch wrote.
