An initial investigation into the incident revealed that one of the soldiers in the unit had accidentally fired his gun while cleaning it, and hit the victim. A high ranking officer was appointed to investigate the incident further, while a simultaneous military police investigation is also underway.

Meanwhile Tuesday, an IDF reserves officer was moderately injured by an explosion that occurred during a training exercise at a base in southern Israel.

The officer, who serves in the IDF Engineering Corps, was hurt when an explosive devise was apparently detonated by accident at the Tze'elim ground forces training base.

The officer was evacuated for treatment to the Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva.

Brigadier General Guy Tzur, the commander of the base, suspended all training exercises for two hours on Tuesday morning so as to sharpen security procedures.

An officer at the rank of colonel will be questioned over the incident.

Later Tuesday, two civilians, 15 and 20, were also hurt at the Tze'elim base when they entered training grounds. An IDF helicopter evacuated the civilians to Soroka hospital in Be'er Sheva. An all-terrain vehicle and a metal detector were found at the scene, and had likely belonged to the two victims, who entered the site during a military exercise.

The IDF said that signs prohibiting civilians from entering the area in Hebrew, English and Arabic were posted all around the area. IDF sources believe the two had entered the training ground aiming to steal metal.

The IDF issued a statement saying that the growing phenomenon of civilians entering firing zones was dangerous and illegal. This is a phenomenon that the IDF faces on a daily basis, the statement said.
