Parents of injured toddler remanded
By Roni Singer-Heruti and Jonathan Lis

The parents of a 6-week-old infant, who are suspected of severely abusing him, were yesterday ordered to remain in custody. The boy regained consciousness yesterday and is breathing on his own, but his medical future is still uncertain. He was brought to Sheba Medical Center on Thursday from the family's Or Yehuda home with severe injuries, including bleeding in the brain.

Police detectives involved in the case have surmised, based on the medical evaluation, that the mother, 32, caused the baby's injuries by shaking him. The Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court yesterday extended her custody by five days, and the father's custody for another three days.

Detectives are investigating whether the mother is suffering from postnatal depression. They say that she has denied being depressed. Since her arrest, she has barely spoken with investigators and displays apathy and indifference to questions. When asked whether she hit her baby she refused to answer, but at some point suggested that perhaps her eldest son, who is 4, was responsible.

"We have ruled out that version of events because it is not congruent with the infrant's injuries," the Mesubim station commander, Chief Superintendent Ami Dahan, said. Nevertheless, the older boy is to undergo questioning on the subject and on his mother's behavior. He was a victim of abuse by his mother in the past, and was removed from the family home temporarily after suffering a broken arm as well as burns on his belly from hot soup.

Neither neighbors nor relatives have given the police information that sheds light on the case. All of the neighbors deny having heard shouting or crying.

The parents have not visited their baby in hospital. The mother's attorney, Yashar Yakoby, said the injuries might have been caused by the infant's having been carried in a baby carrier.

A few relatives have offered to take in the baby's older siblings.
