Health Ministry to vaccinate health workers against measles

The Health Ministry is planning to speed up the process of immunizing all health workers in Israel against measles after an outbreak was declared in Israel and Europe in recent months and after a Jerusalem doctor got sick, as did a nurse who attended a conference in Eilat.

The Director General of the Health Ministry, Professor Avi Israeli, issued a memo to all health workers in Israel several months ago recommending that they become immunized.

The head of the health administration at the Health Ministry, Doctor Hezi Levy, said that ministry teams will begin mapping the measles outbreak in order to determine the point of origin, and then prioritize the immunizations of health workers in those areas.

The inoculation project will begin next week and will include, according to ministry estimates, several thousand people. "We've recommended to all health workers to get immunized but it appears that not everyone has followed the recommendation and now we will try to do go about it in a more centralized fashion," Dr. Levy told Haaretz.

The first measles cases were discovered in Jerusalem last summer, after guests from Britain infected several people at a wedding party. The Health Ministry has since urged the public to ask to be immunized, but the response was disappointing and more and more cases have been discovered.

The Health Ministry has announced that this is not an epidemic, but that a rise in measles cases has also been recorded in Europe. However, the disturbing fact remains that there were nine cases of measles in Israel last year, in contrast with the 900 cases in recent months.
