(AP) Last update - 08:14 20/03/2008 McCain: Iranian threat to U.S. linked to Hamas, Hezbollah aid By Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent Tags: McCain, Iran, Hamas, Israel Here in Israel, U.S. Senator John McCain said the Iranian threat to American troops in Iraq was linked to Tehran's aid for Hamas and Hezbollah. McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, even stressed that the U.S. should not leave Iraq quickly because it would invite increased Iranian influence. Advertisement In their discussions, Israeli officials emphasized the importance of stopping Iran's nuclear program and headway into the Palestinian territories, and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Israel believes Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons. Olmert added that deterrence can stop the rocket fire from Gaza without Israel having to conquer the Strip. McCain, who toured Sderot Wednesday, agreed that the situation in the south was "untenable," and offered an American correlation: "If they were to fire at residents of a town in Arizona, the U.S. would respond. The residents would definitely ask for a response." Defense Minister Tzipi Livni reviewed the threats facing Israel. "A change in Gaza is imperative," she said. "Iranian arms are being smuggled into the Gaza Strip, the range of rocket fire is growing, and many more Israeli civilians are exposed to threats," Livni said. McCain discussed Iran at length with opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu (Likud), and also asked about Syria. Netanyahu said that if Syria distances itself from Iran and Hezbollah, it would be possible to consider resuming negotiations. National Infrastructure Minister Benjamin Ben Eliezer told McCain, "A nuclear Iran would destabilize the region, hurting the moderate Arab and Gulf States, and consequently also the West's energy security."
