Rouhi Fattouh, a senior adviser of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, was arrested Tuesday after he was caught at the Allenby bridge on the Jordanian-West Bank border with thousands of cellular phones in his car.

Fattouh's driver was arrested Tuesday night and questioned by security forces in Ramallah suspicion that he is behind the smuggling.

A Fatah official said that Fattouh had no idea that the phones, which are worth 1.5 million dollars, were in the car and that the driver is responsible. According to the official, the driver was smuggling the phones to an accomplice in Jordan.

The Palestinians Authority has requested that authorities in Amman arrest the accomplice.

Fattouh denied any ties to the incident. Palestinian officials said that Abbas has instructed that the incident be investigated in full.
