McCain to Peres: My concern over Iranian threat has increased

U.S. Republican presidential candidate John McCain met with President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem on Tuesday, and expressed his fears regarding the threat posed by Iran.

"Iran is funding, training, and aiding extremist groups," McCain told Peres. "My concern over this issue has increased following my current tour of the Middle East." He added that he was worried by Iran's negative effect on the region.

McCain is in the midst of a week-long tour of Israel, Iraq, Jordan, Britain and France. He described the trip as a fact-finding, mission, not a campaign photo opportunity.

Peres told McCain during their meeting that the Iranian threat is not limited to Israel, saying "a combination of terror, nuclear capability and irresponsible leadership creates a threat to the entire world."

"Even Arab nations in the region fear Iran, and we must say it out loud," Peres added. "The United Nations must decide that a member nation cannot call for the destruction of another member nation."

Earlier Tuesday, McCain received a celebrity welcome as he arrived in Jerusalem, with American tourists scrambling to shake his hand and get a souvenir snapshot.

McCain began his two-day Israel visit with a trip to the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and museum. As his motorcade pulled up, dozens of tourists greeted him and chanted "Mac is back," while he shook their hands and posed for photographs.

During his 90-minutes at Yad Vashem, McCain was visibly moved, his eyes welling with tears as he viewed photographs from Nazi death camps.

He laid a wreath in memory of the 6 million Jewish Holocaust victims and lit a memorial flame, wearing a skullcap placed on his head by Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, who accompanied him along with Sen. Lindsey Graham from South Carolina.

Lieberman, an independent and Graham, a Republican, are two of McCain's top supporters in his campaign for the Republican nomination and his bid for the presidency.

Signing the Yad Vashem visitors' book he wrote: "I am deeply moved. Never again. John McCain.
