Green groups eye municipal elections
By Zafrir Rinat

Environmental organizations launched a campaign yesterday to evaluate candidates according to their environmental record ahead of November's local elections.

"We also certainly intend to point out candidates who have a problematic past with respect to the environment," attorney Alona Schaefer, director of the umbrella organization Life and Environment, told a press conference. The campaign was launched under the slogan "Green Now." The activists said they were not necessarily supporting the Green Party. "Our agenda is political, but not partisan," they said, adding that they wanted all parties to have environmental activists.

The groups said they would present four targets to candidates and follow up their work after the election: a 15-percent reduction in air pollution in the coming years, public transportation to enable movement from the city's outskirts to the center in 15 minutes, a park five minutes' walk from all homes, and a funding increase of at least 25 percent for environmentally friendly infrastructure in low-income areas.
