Traffic cop jailed for shooting at drivers who refused to pull over

The Be'er Sheva District Court sentenced a traffic police officer to an unusual 15 months in prison and 6 months suspended for shooting at cars he chased while on duty.

Eitan Ovadiah was convicted of causing extensive damage to various vehicles as vengeance for drivers' failure to pull over at his request, and attempts to flee.

The shootings occurred in 2003. In one of the incidents, Ovadiah began a car chase after a driver who refused to pull over. During the chase he spotted the vehicle parked on the side of the road, apparently abandoned by the driver. He proceeded to smash the car's windows with a rock and cut holes in the tires.

In another incident, the police officer opened fire at the driver of a fleeing car, causing the driver to panic and lose control over the vehicle.

In a third incident, Ovadiah and another officer poured sand into the oil tank of a car they had been chasing, completely destroying the engine.

The policeman was also convicted of smashing windows, slashing tires and removing car radios.

The Police Investigations Department (PID) of the Justice Ministry launched an investigation into the affair and decided to indict Ovadiah and two other officers.

Ovadiah has since resigned from the police force, after being convicted of endangering a person's life on a roadway, causing intentional harm to a vehicle and abuse of police power, among other things.
