Livni, in U.S., speaks to Obama by phone, pressing Iran issue
By Shmuel Rosner

WASHINGTON - Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, on a visit to the United States, spoke yesterday by phone to one of the Democratic presidential candidates, Senator Barack Obama. Livni was reportedly hoping for meetings with the presidential candidates, but scheduling did not allow for them.

Obama, who was in Mississippi yesterday for that state's primary, called Livni, who was in Washington.

Livni told Obama there was a direct link between Iran and Middle East terror. Israel's strategy was to work toward understandings through negotiations while working against Hamas and terror. For this strategy to succeed, the international community had to stand fast against terror and Iran.

Obama sent his condolences to the families of the victims of last week's attack on the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva. He reiterated that Israel has a right to self-defense against missiles from Gaza.

Obama said the U.S. and Israel had a common interest in preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons, and that he admired Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Livni for their commitment to talks with Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.

In the coming days, Livni is expected to speak to Democratic candidate Senator Hillary Clinton and Republican candidate Senator John McCain.
