Last update - 15:04 11/03/2008 Jewish club reopens in Vienna 70 years after Nazis seized it By The Associated Press Tags: Israel, Holocaust, vienna A Jewish sports club that was seized by the Nazis 70 years ago was finally reopening in Vienna on Tuesday. The club Hakoah, which means strength in Hebrew, was being rededicated in its new home in the Austrian capital's sprawling Prater park. Vienna's once-vibrant Jewish community founded the club in 1909, and it produced a number of Olympic athletes. But the Nazis seized it in 1938 after Hitler's Germany annexed Austria, and organizers struggled for years to acquire property for a new clubhouse. Advertisement The club's reopening comes on the eve of the anniversary of the Nazi takeover. About 1 million Austrians packed Vienna's central Heldenplatz - or Heroes' Square - to cheer Hitler's arrival on March 12, 1938.
