Last update - 11:58 11/03/2008 MKs approve Merkel's request to address Knesset in German By Haaretz Service Tags: Israel, Germany, holocaust  The Knesset House Committee approved German Chancellor Angela Merkel's request to address the Knesset in German Tuesday, in a heated vote that passed seven to two. According to the Knesset laws, heads of state are allowed to address the Knesset in their native language without special approval. However, because Merkel is the chancellor and Germany also has a president, the decision was sent to the Knesset House Committee for approval. The two rightist MKs who voted against the approval, slammed the decision. Advertisement "I cannot stand to hear German in the Knesset," NRP-National Union MK Aryeh Eldad said, "my mother and father were murdered in that language." "They are Amaleks, they are the mother of all Amaleks. The Jews must not return to be doormats," NRP-National Union MK Uri Ariel said. Kadima MK warned that if speech was not approved, it would cause a diplomatic crisis with Germany. Head of the Knesset House Committee David Tal (Kadima) said that Europe is tired of Israel and sick of what is happening here. "Israel needs to hug a ally like Germany," Tal said.
