Infrastructures Min. Ben-Eliezer warns of next political murder

A senior minister Monday warned of another political murder, following the incitement and abuse that Education Minister Yuli Tamir faced from dozens of students at Mercaz Harav yeshiva on Sunday.

Tamir was driven from the Jerusalem yeshiva, where a terrorist killed eight students last Thursday. However, contrary to previous reports, Mercaz Harav rabbis Monday denied that they had refused Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's request to visit the yeshiva later this week.

We've seen such things before when Rabin was murdered, and apparently they haven't learned their lesson," National Infrastructures Minister Benjamin Ben Eliezer said Monday at a Labor Party meeting. "Like then, the incitement now may lead to another political murder."

Tamir said she had never seen "such a level of hatred. It was the first time I felt as if I hadn't had bodyguards, they would have hurt me." She was also kicked in the back twice.

The National Union-Yisrael Beitenu faction Monday visited the yeshiva. The MKs accused the the government of being partner to the "massacre," due to its leniency toward Palestinian terror and murderous Arabs, particularly those with Israeli citizenship.

MK Nissan Slomiansky blasted Tamir for cutting yeshiva budgets and said her visit was a provocation. "She should not have gone there," he said, adding that she had been asked not to visit the yeshiva but came anyway.

The Likud faction also visited the yeshiva. "The essence of terror is to sow fear and despair and its scope is limited only by our resistance," said faction leader MK Benjamin Netanyahu. "The cabinet ministers' policy is wrong and indecisive, but they are not enemies of Israel." Mercaz Harav rabbis told the Likud members that Olmert's bureau had never approached them about a visit.

MK Yuval Steinitz told them that they should have allowed Olmert to visit the yeshiva. The rabbis replied had they received such a request it would have raised a controversy among them.

MK Limor Livnat said at the meeting that the students' attack on Tamir gave certain people a chance to deal with the attack on the minister rather than the murder. "The outcome was that the media was preoccupied with Yuli Tamir instead of indentifying with the mourning over the students' murder," Livnat said.
