Yeshiva gunman's family say funeral will be at dawn to avoid media frenzy

The family of the terrorist who killed eight people and wounded 9 others at the Mercaz Harav yeshiva in Jerusalem last week has announced that the gunman's funeral will be held at dawn in order to comply with police demands to avoid a media frenzy surrounding the event.

Ala Abu Dhaim opened fire on students in the yeshiva's library on Thursday, killing seven boys aged 15 to 19 and one aged 26 as they studied.

Jerusalem police said Monday that despite the family's announcement, no agreement had yet been reached with them to release the gunman's body for burial. The family had been sent a list of conditions pertaining to the management of the funeral procession including strict limits on the number of participants, the police said.

The police also demanded that media not be allowed to attend the event. The family had not yet responded to the list of conditions, the police said.

Two youths aged 15 and 17 were detained in the gunman's village, Jabel Mukaber, on Monday for hanging Hamas and Hezbollah flags on mourners' homes. Investigations revealed that the youths were not connected to Abu Dhaim's family and were not in any way involved with the shooting attack.

On Friday police ordered the family, known to be linked to Hamas, to remove the organization's flags hung outside their home.

Hamas had initially issued statements taking responsibility for the massacre but shortly afterwards retracted this claim.

On Sunday, Likud MK Gilad Erdan said he intends to propose a bill that would ban mourners' tents or any other public form of mourning or remembrance for terrorists.

"It is our obligation to send a clear message that whoever murders innocent civilians will not only not receive any financial benefits from the state, but also will not be commemorated in public," said Erdan.

"The State of Israel acts more like a suicidal democracy than a democracy that is defending itself," said Erdan.

Meanwhile, six right-wing Israeli activists were detained Sunday afternoon as they prepared to march to the terrorist's home in Jabel Mukaber. A squad of Israel Police declared the march an illegal gathering and detained several participants.
