Second victim of ambush on IDF jeep laid to rest in Ashkelon

Israel Defense Forces Staff Sergeant Liran Banai, who died three days after he was wounded in an attack on his IDF jeep near Gaza, was laid to rest on Sunday evening in Ashkelon.

Banai was critically wounded and another killed when Palestinian militants ambushed his IDF jeep while driving along the Gaza Strip border.

Banai, of Ashkelon, was driving the jeep when it drove over an explosive device next to Kibbutz Ein Hashlosha, on the Israeli side of the border with central Gaza.

He was airlifted to Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva, where doctors worked tirelessly in an effort to save his life.

The other slain soldier, whose name was not made public as per his family's wishes, was sitting in the front passenger seat when the explosive detonated. Two soldiers who were in the rear seat were lightly wounded.

Islamic Jihad and Hamas claimed joint responsibility for the attack.

Liran was the son of Guy and Gila Banai, who are both deaf. Gila's sister, Eliza Depiero, said she heard about the ambush on the news, and moments later received a call telling her what happened.

"At that moment we left to come here, to Soroka," she said. "Liran was very important to his parents. He helped them communicate, and also a little in work. Neither of the parents work."

Banai also leaves behind a sister, who is also currently serving in the IDF, and a 12-year-old brother.
