Iberian energy giant EDP interested in solar-power tender
By Avi Bar-Eli
Tags: Israel

One of Europe's largest energy companies, the EDP Group, is considering organizing a consortium of companies to bid on the tender for two new Negev solar plants. Senior executives of EDP renewable energy subsidiary Neo Energia (New Energy) visited Israel over the weekend and met with representatives of companies in the alternative energy field. EDP is represented in Israel by the Priority investment house.

Last week the minimal preliminary requirements for the BOT tender were published. The international tender included financing, construction and operation of two solar power plants near Ashalim in the Western Negev, not far from the Egyptian border. The technology used will be thermo-solar, and each plant will produce 80-125 megawatts of electricity.

The conditions include having provided the technology for a solar power plant in the last two years, of at least 3 megawatts, and experience in building and operating a conventional power plant of at least 100 megawatts. In addition, there are financial criteria such as $200 million in annual revenues, and equity of $70 million.

EDP is based in the Iberian peninsula. It owns the largest electric company in Portugal and the fourth largest in Spain, and operations in Brazil and the U.S.
