Last update - 21:20 07/03/2008 Jordan's Abdullah warns failure of Israel-PA peace talks may boost Iran By The Associated Press Tags: king abdullah  Jordan's King Abdullah II has warned that the failure of the peace process between Palestinian and Israel will increase Iran's ambitions in the region. The Jordanian monarch, a close U.S. ally, is on an official visit to the United States to try to find a way to bolster efforts to secure an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement. In an interview with Washington-based National Public Radio, Abdullah warned of what he called Iran's growing influence, directly as well as through Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza. Advertisement Those in the Iranian government that are pursuing this policy have hijacked the Palestinian corps, he said. The failure of the peace process will get them to increase their ambitions in the region. He also warned that "There are new state actors (such as Iran) in the region and my fear is that the failure of the peace process will increase the aggression of the extremists in our region." "It will bring us into a very dark future; all of us, Americans, Israelis, Palestinians, Arabs," he said. "And if it doesn't play out between the Israelis and Palestinians, there's Lebanon and there's also Iraq." Abdullah urged the international community led by the U.S. to help resolve the thorniest of the final status issues between the Palestinians and the Israelis, which include the fate of refugees, the borders and the status of Jerusalem.
