Dichter: E. J'lem Arabs involved in militant activity should be expelled

Public Security Minister Avi Dichter told mourners at Friday's funeral for eight yeshiva students killed by a Palestinian gunman on Thursday that East Jerusalem Arabs should be expelled to the West Bank if found to be involved in militant activity.

Vice Premier Haim Ramon said the attack proves that Israel must leave the outer neighborhoods of East Jerusalem on the eastern side of the West Bank separation fence, Channel 2 reported Friday.

Police Chief Dudi Cohen said on Friday that the shooting attack at the Mercaz Harav religious school was an isolated incident carried out by one terrorist, and does not indicate the start of a third Intifada.

He maintained that the shooting attack was especially severe because the terrorist was from East Jerusalem and held an Israeli identification card.

Security forces across Israel remained on alert Friday, following the terrorist attack in Jerusalem on Thursday evening, in which eight people were shot dead in the library of a religious school.

Police raised their alert to level 'C' ahead of Muslim Friday prayers at the mosques in Jerusalem, after receiving intelligence reports that Palestinian worshippers may attempt to disrupt order.

Thousands of officers were deployed in Jerusalem and a limit was imposed on Palestinian access to Friday prayers at the al-Aqsa mosque, Islam's third holiest site.

Police fear violence in Jerusalem's Old City, where both Jews and Muslims gather for prayer on Friday. Al-Aqsa mosque overlooks the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site.

Only Muslim men over the age of 45 with a valid blue identity card will be allowed to enter the Temple Mount for prayers. Female worshippers will not be limited from entering, Army Radio said.

Jerusalem Police Chief Aharon Franco said the forces were working to prevent another tragedy from occurring in the city. "We've deployed force in every street in Jerusalem, with an emphasis on public places," he said.

The defense establishment has also imposed a closure on the West Bank and Gaza Strip, beginning Friday. The IDF said the closure would be lifted according to security assessments.

Funeral processions for the dead students - one of them 26 years old and the rest teenagers between ages 15 and 19 - departed from the Mercaz Harav seminary in West Jerusalem at 10 A.M. The funerals themselves will begin at 11:30 in the victims' communities around the country.

Afterward, the Jewish seminarians gathered outside the library and screamed for revenge, shouting, "Death to Arabs," while in Hamas-controlled Gaza, thousands of jubilant Palestinians took to the streets to celebrate.

"The government must immediately halt all negotiations and eradicate terrorism in every way possible," said David Rotem of the far-right Yisrael Beiteinu party. "Later, when we have someone to talk with, we can hold negotiations," he told Israel Radio on Friday.

Others rejected that call. "It's the job of a responsible leadership, a logical leadership, to say in moments like these, looking at the blood, at the cries for revenge ... that we, at least we in Israel, will do everything we can in order not to be dragged into this cycle," Meretz leader Yossi Beilin told the radio.
