6 Islamic Jihad militants killed in separate IDF actions in Gaza

Six members of the militant Palestinian group Islamic Jihad were killed Thursday in three separate Israel Defense Forces strikes in the Gaza Strip.

IDF tanks opened fire on four militants near the Kissufim border crossing between Israel and the Strip after identifying an attempt to plant explosives, in the same spot where an explosive device killed an IDF soldier earlier Thursday. The four militants were killed.

Another militant was killed earlier in an Israel Air Force strike near the southern Gaza town of Khan Yunis. A source in the Islamic Jihad confirmed the dead militant was a member of the group. The strike came several hours after another member of the militant group was killed in an IAF strike targeting a rocket launching squad in the northern Strip.

The IAF often targets rocket launching squads in the Gaza Strip in efforts to prevent the ongoing rocket barrages that pound southern Israel nearly every day.

A Qassam rocket fired from Gaza struck a home in the western Negev town of Sderot Thursday evening, wounding four people. The family was home at the time of the attack, and the father, Genadi Polotkov, suffered light to moderate wounds. Three passersby were lightly hurt, and eight people were treated for shock.

Flames engulfed the house following the strike, and firefighters rushed to the scene in an effort to put out the blaze.

A second rocket fired in the same barrage struck a cooking gas tank next to an empty home, sparking a fire, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

A third Sderot house was hit by a Qassam rocket earlier in the day. There were no injuries in that attack, and Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility.

Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip on Thursday fired at least eight Qassam rockets and four mortar shells at the western Negev.

One Qassam struck an open area near Sderot and one of the shells hit an agricultural field in Kibbutz Ein Hashlosha, the site where a Palestinian sniper killed an Ecuadorian volunteer some two months ago.

There were no injuries or damages reported in those incidents.

Workers at Ein Hashlosha left their fields at the time of the attack.

Also on Thursday, Hamas Radio reported that its militants opened fire on an IAF planes. No comment was available from the IDF.

Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry on Wednesday finished erecting 120 fortified concrete bus shelters throughout Sderot, to serve as erstwhile shelters against rocket fire.

Some of the shelters can accommodate people who use wheelchairs.

Israel has pledged to keep up the pressure on militants to halt the continuous rocket fire on the Negev.
