Public feels unsafe despite police's claims of less crime

Several murder cases and dozens of cases in which grenades were thrown at houses in the past year remain unsolved, Tel Aviv district commander Ilan Franco said Wednesday. Franco met Wednesday with journalists to sum up the police activities in 2007.

Franco admitted that the public feels unsafe despite police figures showing a reduced crime rate.

"I don't have enough cops to make their presence felt in the Tel Aviv area," he said. "In similar cities in the world you see more police. We need to make them more visible as well."

Asked why the police keep saying that the crime rate has been reduced while surveys reflect a strong sense of public insecurity, Franco said "the police cannot bridge the gap between the work we do and figures we present, and the people's feeling of not being safe."

Franco said the police are investigating a number of unsolved murders, including the murders of Dr. David Niv, attorney Anat Fliner, the security guard and his boss at Night nightclub, Alexander Steiner in the Holon industrial area, among many others.

One of the main problems is providing the prosecution with sufficient evidence to indict the suspects.

"We're having trouble bridging the gap between intelligence and evidence," he said.

The number of grenades thrown at houses rose to 90 during 2007, and most of these cases remain unsolved. Police assume that most of these cases are associated with gray market debts, police assume.

Franco said that 120 more policemen will patrol Tel Aviv's streets this year, adding that the city would be divided into four sections with a police officer in charge of each one.
