Police slam IDF probe into killing of West Bank teen by settler

Police on Monday expressed reservations over an Israel Defense Forces preliminary investigation into the killing of a Palestinian teen by a West Bank settler, which determined that he acted appropriately.

The Neriah resident told IDF investigators he had opened fire on the Palestinian youth with his personal weapon near the West Bank city of Ramallah, after a group of some 30 protesters surrounded him during his morning walk.

He was arrested after the incident and told investigators that he had begun shooting out of fear that the protesters would try to lynch him.

According to the preliminary probe, the man encountered the group while walking a side street in the Talmonim settlement.

When the group began hurling rocks at him, the settler said, he opened fire into the air to deter them. When the group continued to throw rocks at him, he pointed his gun at the 17-year-old protester, striking him in the lower body.

Colonel Amir Abulafia, who headed the preliminary probe, determined that the settler acted appropriately.

A police source told Haaretz that "with respect to the officer who conducted the IDF investigation, the police probe has yet to reach conclusions."

"Unlike the military probe, police are now seeking evidence on the ground, rather than engage in a completely theoretical discussion," the source said.

The suspect is currently being interrogated by Sha'ar Binyamin police and is expected to be taken soon to the scene for reenactment of the incident, provided that the security situation in the area allows it.

The Palestinian demonstration was one of a string held over the last few days to protest the IDF operation in Gaza, which killed more than 100 people in two days.

Violent protests erupted throughout the day on Sunday, in West Bank communities around Jerusalem, as Palestinians in Atarot, Har Adar and Qalandia began throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails at IDF troops in the region.

Three IDF troops and an Israeli civilian were lightly wounded across the West Bank on Sunday from Palestinian rock attacks.

Also on Sunday, IDF troops killed a 14-year-old Palestinian in Hebron, after he cut through the West Bank separation fence.
