(Archives) Last update - 21:09 28/02/2008 Report: Chelsea fans hurl anti-Semitic abuse at coach Grant By Eli Cook, Haaretz Correspondent Tags: Avram Grant, Israel  Chelsea's Israeli soccer coach Avram Grant has been the victim of anti-Semitic abuse from his own club's fans, according to a British tabloid. The Daily Star says that during Sunday's Carling Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea supporters, dismayed by their team's poor performance, began chanting "insults which made reference to the Chelsea manager being Jewish." The newspaper quotes a fan who was sitting near Grant's Holocaust survivor father as saying that, "As the game started to slip away from Chelsea, some fans started shouting out some pretty nasty anti-Semitic stuff." Advertisement The fan told the Star that, "It must have been very distressing for his dad. There seem to be some hard-core Chelsea fans who are very anti-Grant because he's Jewish." According to the report, Piara Powar, director of the anti-racism organization Kick It Out, said that "it does seem that some fans have a problem with the club having a Jewish manager." "The overwhelming majority of our fans share the club's abhorrence of all forms of discrimination," Chelsea said in response. "However, should there be proof of that behaviour by any Chelsea Football Club member or season ticket holder we will take the strongest possible action." Last week, a parcel containing a note to Grant claiming that an accompanying amount of powder was lethal, was sent to Chelsea's training ground on Tuesday, and opened by a staff member. Local police closed the ground before the powder was tested and found to be harmless. According to the Daily Mail, one note in the package read: "You are a back-stabbing Jewish bastard. When you open this letter you will die a very slow and painful death." Another message made sexual threats against his wife, Tzofit.
