Body of American cantor killed in flash flood flown back to N.Y.

The body of a Jewish American cantor who drowned in a flash flood near the Dead Sea on Monday was set to be flown back to the U.S. on Tuesday for burial, police said.

The man, David Tauber, was killed near the Dead Sea on Monday when floodwaters raced down the riverbed where he was hiking with his wife, according to police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld. His wife, Heather Tauber, survived and was treated by medics on the scene.

Tauber's body was found by Manu Barak, a member of Ein Gedi's rescue unit, who had received information that a vehicle had become trapped in the reserve because of the rainy conditions.

"I reached the spot in my car together with a large group of rescue officials in order to rescue the man, but suddenly I saw a body float in the water," Manu said.

A doctor arrived on the scene and pronounced Tauber dead.

Emergency services found a woman nearby who also had been swept away by the flood, Rosenfeld said. Her nationality could not be immediately confirmed but she is presumed to have been Tauber's wife.

"She was hiding in a cave," Barak said. "She was completely drenched and in serious distress."

Tauber, who was in his mid-30s, was the cantor at the North Shore Synagogue in Syosset, New York. He was also an opera singer who had won numerous awards for Jewish liturgical music, according to a biography on the synagogue's Web site.

Tauber lived in Brooklyn, New York, according to the site.

The Dead Sea, the world's lowest point at about 430 meters (1,400 feet) below sea level, is surrounded by desert and generally arid cliffs. At certain times of the year, however, rain falling in the hills can come rushing down the steep descents, causing sudden and violent torrents in otherwise dry spots.

Tuesday rainfall caused a series of other accidents in the area, one of which involved Channel 2 journalist Menachem Horowitz, who sustained moderate injuries. His family members, who were with him in the vehicle, sustained light injuries.

"[The downpour] was a minor event until it suddenly turned tragic," Merav Ayalon, a spokesperson for Kibbutz Ein Gedi said.
