Last update - 13:44 26/02/2008 Survey: Jews are America's top-earning religious group By Bradley Burston, Haaretz Correspondent Tags: Mormons, Muslims, Jews  American Jews are the country's highest earning religious group, according to a research study released this week, with 46 percent of Jewish respondents reporting annual incomes of $100,000 or more. The far-ranging study conducted by the Washington D.C.-based Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life also showed that Mormons and Muslims were the U.S. religious groups with the largest families. More than one in five Mormons and 15 percent of Muslim adults in the United States have three or more children living at home, the research showed. Seventy-two percent of Jewish respondents said they had no children, the highest such percentage recorded by the Pew Research Center's U.S. Religious Landscape Survey, based on interviews with more than 35,000 Americans 18 and older. Advertisement A close second to Jews in the income rankings of U.S. religious groupings were U.S. Hindus, 43 percent of whom said they earned six-figure annual incomes. According to the study, nearly half of Hindus in the United States and a third of Jews have attended graduate schools, compared with only about one-in-ten of the adult population overall. The survey also showed that while people who describe themselves as unaffiliated stand out for their relative youth (31 percent of the unaffiliated are under 30), Jews and members of mainline Protestant churches are older, on the average, than members of other religious groups. Roughly half are age 50 and older, compared with some 40 percent of Americans overall. The researchers found that overall, more than a quarter of American adults "have left the faith in which they were raised in favor of another religion - or no religion at all. If change in affiliation from one type of Protestantism to another is included, roughly 44 percent of adults have either switched religious affiliation, moved from being unaffiliated with any religion to being affiliated with a particular faith, or dropped any connection to a specific religious tradition altogether." Leaving one's religion was particularly evident among American Catholics, researchers said. While nearly a third (31%) of Americans were raised Catholic, fewer than one-in-four (24%) today describe themselves as Catholic.
