Blast that hurt two IDF officers caused by test of Hezbollah RPG
By Yuval Azoulay, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Israel, Second Lebanon War

An explosion that wounded two Israel Defense Forces officers on a central Israel base Monday was caused by a test of a Hezbollah rocket-propelled grenade captured during the Second Lebanon War, sources said.

According to the sources, the purpose of the test was to determine the size of the blast caused by the rocket, which Hezbollah used heavily against IDF soldiers and tanks during the war.

The test also involved several other weapons employed by Hezbollah that the IDF was able to seize in the war.

The IDF spokesman's office refused to comment on the nature of the test, saying only that it would establish a committee to investigate.

An officer was seriously injured in the incident, losing his arm, while a non-commissioned officer was moderately hurt.

This is not the first time an experiment has caused an explosion at an IDF base. Two years ago, there was an explosion at a facility run by Rafael, the Armaments Development Authority, in Kiryat Bialik.

Four people were injured in that blast.

Just a few weeks ago, an explosion occurred on a navy missile ship anchored at a base in Haifa. That blast seriously injured one soldier, moderately injured another and lightly injured five more.
