Comptroller: The president's bureau is not exempt from inspection

Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss said Wednesday that the president's bureau is not exempt from inspection. Lindenstrauss' comment came in response to President Shimon Peres' refusal to allow a comptroller's team inspect the bureau.

"This opposition amazes me. After all, these inspections are at the very heart of democracy," Lindenstrauss said during the Knesset State control committee's questioning of Winograd panel member Yechezkel Dror regarding the political considerations that were taken into account in the panel's report on the Second Lebanon War.

According to Lindenstrauss, he did not intend to inspect the activities of President Shimon Peres but rather the actions of his bureau and staff.

"Our inspection does not concern the president's decisions but rather the administrative behavior of his bureau," the comptroller said.

It is inconceivable that a political body will refuse inspection. The Knesset needs to respond to this," Lindenstrauss said, "I cannot believe that this can happen in Israel and I will not give up.
