Interior Minister says will freeze merger plan for municipalities

Interior Minister Meir Sheetrit said on Monday he intends to freeze a merger scheme for dozens of municipalities, due to strident opposition voiced by council heads and local politicians.

A month and a half ago Sheetrit unveiled a proposal to carry out mergers of 27 municipalities nationwide, including Bat Yam and Holon, Ramat Gan and Givatayim, and Herzliya, Ramat Hasharon, and Kfar Shmaryahu.

As similar proposals have been discarded in the past, including one that Sheetrit promoted as finance minister, its implementation was perceived as highly unlikely.

Sheetrit said the proposal's benefits are obvious, and that he is sorry that it was torpedoed on political grounds.

Two weeks ago Sheetrit said he is willing to postpone elections in municipalities that would consider complying with the merger scheme, because of the need to thoroughly study the scheme.
