(Archive) Last update - 13:25 18/02/2008 Report: Progress made in deal to free abducted soldier Shalit By Haaretz Service Tags: Israel, prisoner exchange  Israel and Hamas have agreed on the identities of 230 Palestinian prisoners, currently being held in Israeli prisons, to be released in exchange for the freedom of Gilad Shalit, who was abducted by Palestinian militants in June 2006, Army Radio reported Monday. According to the report, the two sides still disagree on the remaining 120 prisoners that Hamas demands be released in the first stage of the prisoner exchange deal, but Israel refuses to free. The breakthrough in the negotiations came after Israel decided to "loosen" the definition of "blood on their hands" - a euphemism used in Israel to describe Palestinians who were involved in murdering Israelis. The term is often used to justify Israel's refusal to release a given prisoner. Advertisement Prior to the loosening of the "blood on their hands" criteria, decided upon by a special ministerial committee, Israel agreed to release only 44 of the prisoners on Hamas' list. Meanwhile Monday, Gilad Shalit's father Noam expressed his lack of hope in an interview with Arabic language Nazareth radio station A-Shams, saying "as far as I know, the finalization of a deal is still far off." On Sunday, speaking in Jerusalem to a gathering of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that he does "not share in the optimism" regarding recent media reports of Shalit's imminent release. Regarding the two IDF reservists, Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, who were kidnapped by Hezbollah in July 2006, Olmert said that, "So long as there is no evidence in our hands [of their death], we will continue to operate under the basic assumption that they are alive." Olmert spoke one day after the German political magazine Der Spiegel reported that the prime minister was planning to officially declare the two missing reservists as dead. Noam Shalit responded to the prime minister's speech saying that "I didn't expect anything of this speech, and therefore I can't say that I'm disappointed."
