State offers to halve settlers' personal debts to NIS 350M
By Amiram Cohen, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: debts, loans, israel

The state is offering to forgive NIS 350 million in personal debts of 3,500 settlers in 140 communities in the West Bank, Jordan Valley and Golan Heights, who owe a combined NIS 700 million.

The debts originate in 30-year loans the state provided between 1978 and 2007.

Loans that were granted to settlers in communities in Gush Katif and northern Samaria were erased in a decision by the ministerial disengagement committee.

But it isn't clear whether this erasure will be legally enforceable, and whether the evacuated settlers will be liable for partial payment of the debt.

Although debtors are being urged to take advantage of the program, government sources think they may not, because of the political uncertainty clouding their future.
