AG rejects leniency claims in jail sentence of ex-MK Omri Sharon

Attorney General Menachem Mazuz on Thursday denied rumors that leniencies would be given in the sentencing of former MK Omri Sharon, who was convicted two weeks ago on corruption charges and sentenced to seven months in jail.

Sharon was convicted in a plea bargain of violating campaign finance laws, falsifying corporate documents and perjury in connection with the 1999 primary campaign in which his father, former prime minister Ariel Sharon, was elected head of the Likud Party.

The Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court sentenced him in February 2006 to nine months in prison, but following an appeal, the Tel Aviv District Court later cut the sentence to seven months in jail plus a NIS 300,000 fine.

The Justice Ministry announced, on Mazuz's behalf, that it had not agreed to any changes in the stipulations of Sharon's sentence, adding: "The matter has been handed over to the Prison Services, which must act according to the existing regulations."

The announcement followed rumors that the Justice Ministry had given Prison Services the go-ahead to lighten Sharon's term and grant him furlough twice a week to sit beside his father in hospital.

Sharon is supposed to begin his jail term at the end of this month, following a Supreme Court rejection of his appeal.
